About Kay

Text Box: Kay Granger represents the 12th District of Texas and is the only Republican woman to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives from Texas.

Kay Granger doesn’t just talk about the American dream…she’s lived it.
A school teacher, small business owner and mother, Granger entered politics in 1989 when she was elected to the Fort Worth City Council.  From the start, she showed a knack for attacking problems, not people.  Two years later, the voters of Fort Worth elected her Mayor.  For the next four years, she brought her brand of common sense solutions to the problems of Fort Worth.  Confronted with a crime wave, she fought back with tough police measures that cut Text Box: And faced with the recession of the early 1990s, she worked hard to bring new businesses and new jobs to Fort Worth.
In 1996, Mayor Granger sought to become the first Republican elected to serve the people of the 12th Congressional District of Texas.  Vowing to fight for lower taxes, a stronger national defense and better schools and health care, Granger was overwhelmingly elected.
For the past ten years, she has served in Congress as an advocate for security—economic security and national security.  She fought for important defense projects like the Joint Strike Fighter.  And in the post-9/11 world, she has been a leader on foreign policy.  She stepped into a national leadership role in the war on terrorism based on her work with Iraqi women. She is co-chair of the Iraqi Women’s Caucus and of the Anti-Terrorism Caucus.  In the course of three congressional delegation visits over two years to the Middle East, she worked with and mentored Iraqi women who now either hold elected positions or are leaders in their communities.
And she’s also been leader on economic growth and tax cuts.  Her first year in Congress saw the passage of her legislation to promote pre-paid college tuition for working families.
Congresswoman Granger sits on the Appropriations Committee and serves on the Energy and Water Development, Homeland Security and Military Construction/Veterans Affairs Appropriations Subcommittees. She is considered one of the House of Representatives’ leading defense experts.
Due to her leadership, Congresswoman Granger was elected Vice Chair of the House Republican Conference in 2006, making her the highest ranking Republican woman in Congress.
In 2006, Congresswoman Granger added to her portfolio the title of “author.”  She released, “What’s Right About America,” a book that traces the evolution on American values throughout American history.  Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, praised the book as a “bible for anyone interested in the past, present and future of the American value system.”
Through it all, Congresswoman Granger has focused on making a difference—for her country, her constituents and her children.  She’s lived the American dream.  Now she’s trying to make it a reality for the generations to come.
